About
These paintings were made during the last decade, as I was shifting away from oil paint as a medium in favor of acrylics. I have enjoyed experimenting with acrylic media, including washes of many layers on kozo paper mounted on panels, and more recently crackle paste on panels with bronze, copper, and iron paint that is oxidized, highlighted and rusted. I have tried to match the material to the thematic direction of my interests, which includes our ecological crisis, gender issues, and civil rights. Most recently I have been consumed by the cruel and dysfunctional immigration system. I have an obvious anger over injustice, and these themes often fund and fuse within a single work. During the last several years I have been working on encaustic and faux encaustic paintings (acrylic).
All of my works are symbolic, and need the viewer's elucidation. I want art to open me up, awaken me, challenge me, inform my life, aid my critical thinking. I hope viewer's will engage my work on many levels.
Because of my commitment to social justice issues, all artist's proceeds this year will go to the Fredericksburg VA chapter of Virginia Organizing, a non-profit, non-partisan group dedicating to making Virginia a more just place to live. Please contact the artist for details.
